WHAT'S BEHIND THE NAME
Finus comes from two names: Finland and Unites States.
Since Mia is a native of Finland but considers the US her home, she wanted to portray that in her operation's name.
Finland represents long history and traditions and US represents new beginnings and opportunities.
is training from the foundation up. We welcome all breeds and we don't discriminate against horses based on their breed or previous training background.
Correct training in the beginning lays out the foundation for all the future training, no matter what the discipline will be. Our training methods are traditional yet flexible when needed. Consistency and repetition are the main key elements, things are done the same way every time.
Re-training a horse can be challenging and take a long time. Patience is the key for a horse who is learning a new way of working and who is learning to trust again, if that has been broken in the past.
In order to work together both the rider and the horse need to trust and have a mutual respect for each other.
We are striving for the horses to be happy athletes.
Mia is a native of Finland. She has been riding horses all of her life. She began her riding education at Poni Haka Riding School, in Vantaa, Finland.
When she got her first horse, she did not fully comprehend how it would change her life forever. With that she realized she wanted to work in the equine industry. She went on to study Equine Management at Ypäjä Equine Management School (Hevostalousoppilaitos) where she graduated from in 1991, with honors.
She has competed at the National levels in Show Jumping, Eventing and Dressage.
She is student of classical dressage, attending clinics regularly to advance her riding and training. She has been riding in clinics with Lena Wedenmark since 2004. While in Los Angeles she took regular lessons with Jane McLoud.
Her instructors in Finland included Susann Fagerström, Thomas Ehnrooth, Timo Ajanto, Tiina Tarkkala and many more.
Now in New Jersey she continues her dressage training by taking lessons from well known trainers and attending visiting clinicians. Learning never ends.
Mia's husband Darnell is her biggest supporter.
